Obedience is t tenet of the Jewish religion. Obey without question was a sign of religious exactness. Even when all the signs around t hem pointed to danger, they continued with optimism. "The Germans were already in our town, the Fascists were already in power, the verdict was already out---and the Jews of Sighet were still smiling" (Page 10) This optimism in the face of danger is part of the Judeo-Christian belief. Moses led the children of Israel through the parted waters of the Red Sea. "God will protect us, God will deliver us." Their history led them to believe that God would go before them. This belief actually created the environment for impending disaster. |
